Looking Back at 2025: What This Year Taught Us

Corinne Mason, PhD·

2025 tested leaders in ways few anticipated. Rapid market shifts, organizational restructuring, geopolitical uncertainty, and the ongoing evolution of how and where we work—it all converged into one of the most demanding years for executive leadership in recent memory.

And yet, the leaders I worked with this year didn't just survive it. Many of them grew in ways they didn't expect.

Here's what this year taught us about leadership that lasts.

Clarity is a competitive advantage. In a year of noise and uncertainty, the leaders who could articulate a clear direction—even when the path wasn't fully visible—created stability for their teams. Certainty isn't always possible. Clarity always is.

Resilience isn't about bouncing back. It's about moving forward differently. The leaders who thrived in 2025 didn't return to who they were before the pressure hit. They integrated what they learned and led from a more grounded, more intentional place.

Relationships are the infrastructure of leadership. When everything else was uncertain, the leaders with strong relationships—with their boards, their teams, their peers—had a foundation to work from. Those who had neglected those relationships found themselves isolated at the moments they needed support most.

Self-awareness is not a soft skill. It's a strategic one. The executives who could name what they were feeling, understand how it was affecting their decisions, and recalibrate accordingly made better calls under pressure. Full stop.

As we move into 2026, the question isn't what happened to you this year. It's what you're taking with you—and what you're choosing to leave behind.

What did 2025 teach you about the kind of leader you want to be?
