How is executive coaching different from consulting, mentoring, or therapy?

Consulting provides expert advice and solutions. Mentoring provides guidance based on the mentor's experience. Therapy addresses psychological health and past experience. Executive coaching is none of these. It is a structured developmental process that helps a capable leader become more effective — through insight, accountability, and deliberate practice. The coach does not tell the leader what to do. The coach helps the leader develop the capacity to make better decisions, lead more effectively, and achieve outcomes they could not achieve without the coaching relationship.

Question 2

How do we know if an executive actually needs coaching, or if the problem is something else?

This is the right question to ask. Coaching is not the right intervention for every leadership problem. If the issue is a skills gap that can be addressed through training, coaching is not the answer. If the issue is a structural or organizational problem, coaching will not fix it. If the issue is a values or integrity problem, coaching is not appropriate. Coaching is most effective when the leader is capable, motivated to develop, and operating in an environment where behavioral change will produce meaningful results. A good discovery conversation will help clarify whether coaching is the right intervention.

What does a coaching engagement actually cost?

Executive coaching engagements at New Path typically range from $15,000 to $75,000 depending on scope, duration, and the specific services included. Team coaching engagements are priced separately. We discuss investment transparently in the discovery conversation — there are no hidden fees and no surprises. The more relevant question is the cost of not coaching: a failed executive transition, a dysfunctional leadership team, or a derailing behavior that damages organizational performance typically costs far more than the coaching that could have prevented it.

How do we measure whether coaching is working?

We establish specific, measurable goals at the beginning of every engagement and conduct formal reassessment at the end. Measurement typically includes 360-degree feedback reassessment, stakeholder input, and the leader's own assessment of progress against goals. We also track behavioral indicators agreed in the coaching charter — specific behaviors that the leader, their coach, and their organization have agreed represent meaningful progress. Coaching that cannot be measured is not rigorous enough.

What is shared with the organization sponsoring the coaching?

Coaching conversations are confidential. What is shared with the sponsoring organization — typically the CEO, CHRO, or board — is agreed in advance and documented in the coaching charter. In most engagements, we share progress against goals, not the content of coaching conversations. The leader knows exactly what will be shared before the engagement begins. This transparency is essential to maintaining the trust that makes coaching effective.

How do you select the right coach for a specific leader?

The coaching relationship is the most important variable in coaching effectiveness. We take matching seriously. In the discovery conversation, we assess whether the chemistry, the coach's experience, and the leader's development needs are well-aligned. If we are not the right fit, we will say so. We would rather refer a leader to a better-matched coach than conduct an engagement that will not produce meaningful results.

How long does an engagement take before we see results?

Accepted Answer

Most leaders report meaningful insight within the first two to three sessions. Behavioral change — the kind that is visible to others and produces organizational results — typically takes three to six months of consistent coaching and deliberate practice. Sustainable change, the kind that persists after the coaching engagement ends, requires six to twelve months. We set realistic expectations at the outset and track progress throughout.

Can coaching help a leader who is resistant to it?

Rarely, and not sustainably. Coaching requires the leader's genuine engagement. A leader who is participating because their organization requires it, but who does not personally see the value, will not produce meaningful results. If a leader is resistant, the more productive conversation is about why — and whether the resistance itself is something worth exploring. Sometimes resistance is a symptom of the very development need the coaching is intended to address.

Do you work with leaders outside of Austin and Texas?

Accepted Answer

Yes. While New Path Consulting is based in Cedar Park and Austin, Texas, we work with leaders nationally. Most coaching sessions are conducted via secure video. In-person sessions, including equine assisted coaching, are conducted in the Austin area.
